VampireThe easiest way to spot a vampire is by their eyes and their teeth. Their eyes are usually any generic color of brown, black, yellow or grey except for when a vampire is hungry. As a vampire gets hungry for blood their eyes slowly give off a reddish tint and soon, when they are starved, they experience a blood frenzy where their eyes are a completely bright and burning red color. If a vampire isn't hungry they can blend in much easier with humans. However, they also have sharp canines, or fangs, which help puncture their victims for blood. Aside from these two characteristics vampires are very human-like in appearance. The idea of them being pale might be a common attribute but it is not universal.
Average Lifespan: 80 - 100 years Omnivore / High Blood Demand
Pregnancy
While some believe vampires are able to absorb intact/undigested blood into their own bloodstream through a variety of methods, the truth is that vampires digest blood no differently than hematophages such as vampires bats, leeches and ticks; or even how humans digest their own food.
Vampires are naturally nocturnal but sunlight has virtually no harmful effects on their skin or eyes. Because their blood clots quickly and is circulated by skeletal muscles, vampires can easily survive injuries to the heart and torso. When fighting vampires, your best bet is to aim for the head or spine. |

Vampire History & Culture
Origin & Subspecies:
There were two types of vampires with subtle physical differences: the Valhasey Vampires and the Zorilla Vampires.
The Valhasey Vampire
These vampires originated from Valhan and have four sharp canines (two on both their top and bottom jaw). Their eyes are naturally yellow or a light brown shade, such as beige or caramel, when not in a hungry state.
The Zorilla Vampires
These vampires originated from Zethea and have only two sharp canines on the top of their jaw. Their eyes are naturally black or a shade of dark brown, such as walnut or chocolate, when not in a hungry state.
Aside from these small differences both vampires form the same sort of culture and society. Today declaring yourself a Valhasey or a Zorilla matters in virtually no way aside from in what part of Askeron your ancestry originated.
Against popular belief, vampires do not come from humans or a human created disease. The myth that a vampire's bite has the ability to change the victim into a vampire is misleading and false. It grew from superstitious stories humans told to young children in order to influence a greater fear and hatred for vampires. A bite will simply hurt and if enough blood is taken then the loss of blood could potentially lead to death. Most vampires do not seek out blood from humans, though human blood can be especially delicious.

Unfortunately, there is some hidden truth to the myth that needs better clarification.
Blood Frenzy
A blood frenzy is an experience limited to vampires; it is described as "seeing red." It is a state of mind that happens gradually, causing a vampire's actions to reach an uncontrollable level as thirst consumes them. Both short-term and long-term memory becomes temporarily impaired and the individual may forget who they know and who they are, doing anything to reach blood.
Causes of blood frenzies are similar to dehydration: vigorous exercise, hot weather, excessive sweating, fever, vomiting and the number one cause: not drinking enough blood. It's important to think of a vampire's need for blood in the same way others need water. Their bodies rely on blood and the consequence to not having adequate amounts of it poses a large threat.
As a vampire becomes hungry/thirsty for blood, their eyes slowly give off a reddish tint. Then, when they begin to dip into the levels of dehydration (in terms of blood) their eyes will change into a completely bright and burning red color. A vampire's eyes are a warning and a marker, indicating the state of their bodily fluids. Blood frenzies only subside after adequate amounts of blood is consumed and their eyes are no longer red.
Blood frenzies are the primary reason vampires are feared. It is possible for a vampire to overcome their blood frenzy and contain or prolong the oncoming euphoria but it is not often accomplished. When the body has an insufficient amount of fluid it is difficult to convince it otherwise.
Luckily, so long as vampires quench their thirst they should remind in a safe, rational state of mind.
Still, a bite from a vampire will not cause the victim to turn into a vampire.
The Malicious
However, vampires who remain in a blood frenzy for too long can turn into something quite different. If a vampire experiences a blood frenzy and is unable to fill up on blood within several hours their body starts to show significant signs of change. These changes, once they start, are permanent and irreversible. It usually takes 12 to 72 hours for the full transformation. They become something entirely separate from a vampire, categorized as a new species all together, known as the malicious.
The malicious, or malice, are a breed of monsters with bat-like appearances. Their flesh easily rips and tears, their jaw stretches and unhinges as their teeth sharpen and grow in length causing their mouths to widen. Their nails grow into sharp claws, they become hypermobile in all of their joints, their bodies extremely flexible. The skin on their face stretches back, their ears growing pointed and long. Bat-like wings grow from their shoulder blades. Overtime their skin turns a dull grey in color, erasing who they once were.

Malicious (pictured on the left) are vicious, winged, flesh-eating carnivores that devour every part of its victims, rarely leaving traces of its kill behind. Occasionally they begin their attacks with sucking the blood of its prey till its body is lifeless, where they then proceed to consume its body. They seem to have little mental capacity with minimal thought processes, often referred to as mindless. Many say the person they once were is no longer inside of them. No amount of blood will ever bring back rationale. There has never been a single documentation of a vampire's consciousness or memory ever returning once they had become a malicious.
As you'll come to learn the malicious play an important role in the history of vampires, for it is a bite from a malicious that can alter your state of mind entirely. |
The Renfield Syndrome
Most individuals who fall victim to a malicious will see their grave. For those lucky few who survive an attack from this monster, well they see a grim fate too. While a bite from a vampire does little harm, get bit by a malicious and then live, your world is changed. Drake Renfield is the name of the first human to survive a malice attack and because of that became the namesake for the disease: The Renfield Syndrome.
It is through him and the studies of those similar to him that the vampire species must suffer such extreme discrimination. Renfield began showing signs of delusional thinking almost immediately after he escaped the attack. The disease is best described as being vampire or blood obsessive.

Signs & Symptoms of Renfield Syndrome:
- Delusional Thinking/Hallucinations
- Obsessed Acts of Self Harm
- Altered Identity
- Obsession With Drinking Their Own Blood
- Obsession With Others Drinking Their Blood
- Obsession With Drinking The Blood of Others
Sufferers experience rapid obsession with blood, sometimes dreaming of bloodshed and seeking out a craving to experience its taste. First signs are often a desire to drink their own blood, harming themselves to do so. They may move on to seeking out animal blood. Gradually it enters a stage of craving blood from other humanoids or offering themselves and their blood to vampires. Some create altered identities to go along with their cravings, separating their otherwise sane and normal selves from their new desires.
Many who suffer the disease end up committing suicide later in life or sacrificing themselves in some way. They become so obsessed that many who are hospitalized have to be strapped down in insane asylums. Worse, is that all humanoid species, except for vampires, are susceptible to the disease, with very few experiencing natural immunity. A cure for Renfield Syndrome is still up in the air, with several methods still in the testing process.
Some compare Renfield Syndrome with vampire blood frenzies but the two are noticeably different. Vampires in blood frenzies do not experience a desire for self harm, cannot drink blood from themselves and do not experience the desire to present themselves as a blood offering to other vampires. They also do not experience hallucinations and while they may forget who they are and who they know, they do not create an altered identity altogether.
Sufferers must also not be viewed as mindless, as many with the disease are still capable of holding conversations and upholding some sense of social normalcy, they merely have a newfound obsession, thoughts that may continually intrude on their mind. Not all with the disease are even seen acting on those new thoughts.
Still, some with Renfield Syndrome may be dangerous, to themselves and others. Some individual's obsession progresses into a violent stage, where harming the innocent, even murdering others for the sake of blood consumption, becomes an impulse they struggle to ignore.
Remember, Renfield Syndrome is caused by being bitten by a malicious, not a vampire. So, why do vampires get the bad name?
Malicious are created from vampires. This is all many anti-vampirists need to fuel their hatred. What many don't know is that when Renfield Syndrome was first discovered it was the vampire community that rallied together to prevent the incidents from happening. Rarely do vampires desire to become a malicious, as no being would ever want to lose their sense of self awareness, and rarely did they mean to cause trouble in other humanoid communities.
Monster Hunters
Years ago vampires made themselves useful to society because they honed a skill no others had. The whole culture of vampires surrounded this idea of being the nocturnal defenders, night time monster hunters that protected the borders of civilized communities. Vampires, being naturally nocturnal, would take the night shift hunts to keep any and all monsters at bay. Specifically, they fought against their own kind, the malicious. This, at times, meant fighting brothers and sisters who had become lost in a bloodthirsty deformity. For centuries vampires were experts in this field of hunting. This kept the threat of the malicious close to a rarity. Of course, any time another person was diagnosed with Renfield Syndrome the vampire community got the blame. It didn't matter how hard they tried to prove themselves loyal to the community, it was their collective fault when one of their monster relatives infected an innocent victim.
Before the Renfield Syndrome became a popular name vampires were actually held to a high honor, considered genuinely selfless in their desire to protect others during the night when most would be left vulnerable. It was a job they took voluntarily and were graciously appreciated for. Almost all were raised to be such protectors and warriors in their own right, though not all participated nightly and not all were necessary for the job. Of course, those who didn't proceed into the job of monster hunter ended up serving elsewhere.
Nowadays, Nocturnal Monster Hunters are used in only a handful of cities across Askeron. The Renfield Syndrome drove the vampire name into the ground enough times that the fear override everything else they tried to accomplish. In places that they aren't feared or discriminated against, vampires fit into society in the same mundane ways that humans do.
Blood Supply
The majority of vampires get their blood from animals. Just like other humanoids get their meat, vampires are after the unused blood. Many butchers will sell packs of blood to accommodate the vampire community. Even some shops and restaurants, depending on where in Askeron, will offer up blood. It's not surprising for vampires to hunt for themselves though, sometimes to avoid the disgusted looks of others.
Blood donors are non-vampire humanoids that willingly allow vampires to drink their blood. Donors are typically people who idealize vampiric culture and feel a genuine connection with vampires, most commonly Renfield Syndrome sufferers. While some vampires condone this, others find it difficult to refuse blood offers from humanoids, considering it wasteful. It was this single controversy that sparked groups of vampires, known as "clans" or "houses" to emerge.
Vampire Donor Clans/Houses
A vampire clan is a general term used to describe a group of vampires who organize together under a common principle or belief. There are multiple clans one can be a member of, each clan dictated by a leader who's surname is often times the name that encompasses the group. The term 'house' can be used interchangeably with 'clan' but can also refer to a specific building or location by which the leader and its members reside together. Not all clan members live in a house together, though it can be common.
Originally the purpose of vampire clans and houses were to provide a safe haven for Renfield Syndrome sufferers, safe from the people who were trying to cure or change them. These vampire groups convinced those with the disease that their newfound obsession was okay and could be accepted. It was of mutual benefit to the vampires and the diseased humanoids, with the vampires having access to delicious blood to avoid becoming a malice and the people with a nagging obsession to be feasted on could fulfill their desires and delusions.
These safe haven community houses were compared often to brothels, where vampires took advantage of their obsessive donors in various ways. In some ways, this is not a lie, but donors were rare so they most definitely were not taken for granted.
Eventually, as these houses were being discovered, those that condemned the actions took such large offense that the vampire community was targeted with enormous discrimination and death threats. It was this that sparked the uprising of vampire hunting.
Vampires who are apart of a Donor House are referred to as Backers (Renfield Supporters).
Vampire Hunting
In some places today vampires are hunted, mainly by humans. It originally was a reaction to blood frenzies, the malicious, Renfield Syndrome and Houses that took advantage of the ill but it continued to evolve and encompass much more than that. Vampire fangs grew to be a prized possession to show off after killing a vampire, the fangs now sold for a hefty price in many black market shops, turning them into jewelry. Hunting vampires became a sport, a hobby that humans partake in for fun and bragging rights. For this reason vampires are not always safe in certain kingdoms.
Vampire Retribution Clans/Houses
The vampire hunts progressed, putting all vampires, whether they were a part of a clan or not, at risk. The clans evolved to fight off this new threat. Today some vampire clans/houses may be specifically referred to as "retribution clans" because they work to seek revenge against hunters and often run in secret operations. Retribution clans target vampire hunters, often murdering them at night. Some of which place a limit on members to better protect their identities. They are considered an organized crime syndicate because while it may be legal to hunt vampires in certain kingdoms, even legal to provide housing to Renfield Syndrome sufferers, it is not common or legal to murder humans. There are multiple vampire houses that operate in different ways and joining them requires serious commitment, in similar fashion as the mafia. Retribution clans are a highly intimidating group. Most are encouraged to distance themselves from such activities.
Vampires who are apart of a Retribution House are referred to as Retributionists.
Vampire Absolution Clans/Houses
There are other types of vampire clans and houses, ones that are not fueled by blood donors and ones that do not commit to killing humans, but instead groups that commit to their original purpose - monster/malicious hunting and even, surprisingly so, vampire hunting. Unfortunately, with such a mass controversy, there are some vampires today who so strongly condemn fellow vampires for taking advantage of Renfield Syndrome sufferers and disagree with combating human discrimination through vengeful murders. Thus, they target their own kind, specifically those belonging to Retribution clans. These vampires are known as Absolution clans/houses, creating a sort of street war among different vampire communities. Absolution clans stand for virtue and try to save the name and face of vampires everywhere.
Vampires who are apart of an Absolution House are referred to as Absolutionists.
Human Influence (Daybreakers)
Some vampires, despite the way some humans have reacted to them, attempt to blend in with the human population. They are referred to as Daybreakers, a derogatory term used to describe them. For some, this just seems like the safer bet, but for others there is a true desire to be more human. This internalized self hatred has caused vampires to hide their fangs by shaving them down to be less noticeable. Some will wear colored contacts that hide the red tint that appears when they are even just a little bit hungry. They will drink blood in secret and force themselves to consume food when out in public, despite how bland and awful it may taste. These are some of the extremes individuals are willing to do in order to be a more ideal member of society.
There are, of course, the majority of vampires who take no part in any clan/house and who do not fall into the pit of human influence. They are simply vampires, attempting to live normal lives in a chaotic hated and self hated group of brothers and sisters.
Education
There are vampire only schools in Valhan and Zethea but everywhere else vampires are to attend public schools. The only real benefit to a strictly vampire only school is to separate vampires from any possible discrimination.
